About Us History Shore Porters Staff Fleet

Established in 1921 by one Albert Edward Rumsey in Fulham, the business began life as an upholstery business employing 40 people. After moving to Twickenham, the interest in removals begun as they were increasingly called upon to deal with problems transporting sofas, chairs and general furniture.

Demand for removals grew to such an extent that the business discontinued its interest in upholstery and focused on removals and storage full time. In those early days our first vehicle was a humble 'coster' barrow used to transport items of furniture from the shop through the streets of London.

Who We Are Today

The business, now based in Market Road, Richmond operates from two modern warehouses holding over 650 storage containers, running a fleet of ten modern pantechnicon vehicles and employing 25 staff.

Our removals business is a renowned market leader, carrying out household removals of all sizes both nationally and internationally. We are proud of our 25-year association with the major auction houses and every day on their behalf we transport antiques and works of art to destinations near and far.

Recent high profile 'single owner' sales undertaken by Rumsey & Son include:

  • Removal of effects from Elton John's Holland Park home.
  • Collection of items from the late Sir John Gielgud's home in Wooton Underwood.
  • Removal of property belonging to the late Viscount Leverhulme - the soap entrepreneur and founder of Lever Brothers - from Thornton Manor estate on the Wirral.
  • Moving an eclectic mix of guitars, gold discs and plaster cast fish belonging to the late John Entwhistle, bass guitarist with The Who.
  • Collection of the possesions of violin vistuoso Yehudi Mehuin, including a concert grand piano from a fourth floor window using a ten tonne crane.
